When I decided to embark on a new business venture many people asked, “why dog car seats?” Well, let’s start at the beginning.
Introducing Minnie! (One of my inspirations)
I have always been an avid dog lover. I knew that once I was settled in life I would get my own dog. I was married on November 7, 2015, and one week later we adopted Minnie from our local SPCA.
Her start to a new life with us was rough. She had been neglected in her previous home, was extremely underweight and was covered in hair mats and fleas. We had to foster her for several weeks before we could actually adopt her due to her fragile condition.
Over the course of about two months, she went from being scared and timid to a lively and loving dog. She is now a part of our little family and we couldn’t love her more!
We wanted to make Minnie as comfortable as possible since the poor thing had been through such an ordeal, so we spent as much time as we could with her. My husband and I both work full time so any off time we had we included Minnie. We took her to parks, family dinners, random errands, and trips. You name it; we brought her along.
Although Minnie has a generally calm demeanor, when we took her in the car she would be bouncing from my lap to the seat, back to my lap to the backseat and so on. She would whine and be visibly stressed. I noticed how distracted I was when she was in the car just trying to get her to settle down. Sometimes I would be driving 65mph on the Thruway and think to myself “I need to focus on the road! An accident right now would not end well!”
After many trips like this, I began to do some research on dog car safety to see what information was out there. It was something I had never really thought about or considered but quickly realized how important dog safety in the car really is to the driver and the dog.
I discovered the product dog car seats and the positive impact they have on the overall environment for a dog traveling in a vehicle. I found it surprising that I had never heard of this before. I know plenty of people that take their dog in the car and thought, “they surely have experienced the distractions of a dog in the car, why doesn’t everyone have a restraint system for their dog”.
This is when the wheels in my head started turning.
In a nutshell, that is the story of Minnie and my first inspiration for creating this website as well as my blog www.safeandsoundhound.blog!
